Bushmans Kloof is a refuge of luxury within the untamed wilderness of the Cederberg Mountains, a range in the Western Cape. One of South Africa’s newer and prime safari destinations, the Madikwe Game Reserve is situated in the malaria free North West Province, bordering Botswana. This “Big Five” Reserve spans 185,000 acres, making it one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. It is particularly renowned for its wild dog reintroduction in the east, as well as the unusual gemsbok, tsessebe and springbok. The lions in Madikwe originate from Etosha in Namibia, and are known to hunt very large prey such as giraffe and eland which requires immense strength and makes for impressive sightings.

The Great Karoo is a vast expanse of wilderness preserve located in the Eastern Cape. Walker Bay/Grootbos Forest Lodge

Walker Bay has earned the status of being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. Southern right whales visit Walker Bay from June through to December when the world’s only Whale Crier blows his kelp horn to alert the town when the whales are spotted. The whales use the sheltered bay to calf and it is not uncommon to see pods of 50 or more in the peak months, with whales occasionally coming as close as 150 from the cliffs. The town of Hermanus was originally founded in the early 1800’s, by a shepherd called Hermanus Pieters and the protected bay was named after a Royal Naval officer called Walker.

When the early European settlers reached the Cape in the 16th Century, they soon realized that the soil and climate were perfect for growing wine and so began the South African wine industry. In 1685 the governor of the Dutch colony, Simon van der Stel, planted his first vines at his estate called Constantia. These wines, over time, created a large following among the 18th and 19th Century aristocracy including such notables as Napoleon, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Today the three major wine growing areas are Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and during this interlude you will visit all of them.

This intimate experience is designed for two people allowing them the opportunity to explore Cape Town and its environs in style and combine it with a stay in a luxury tented camp for a true big game experience. Although you will be spending about a week in the Cape Town environs we have divided your stay between three hotels with a common owner.
