Because of its location in relation to Germany, the Czech Republic and the Ukraine, the town is closely connected with European history particularly that of the Hapsburgs, and Prussia. A unique trait of the city is the abundance of canals and tributaries of the River Odra which require over one hundred bridges. It is for this reason that it is often referred to as the “Polish Venice”
