Vilnius has a varied history dating back to Roman times. At one time it was a Polish city and it had a large Jewish population leading Napoleon to declare the city as “Jerusalem of the North”. Prior to World War II the Jewish population was over 250,000 but when the Germans invaded Russia they also invaded Vilnius and the resulting holocaust decimated the population. The legacy of the culture still remains however and it, along with one of the more charming old towns, makes Vilnius an interesting place to visit based on history and culture
