Combine all your visual images from Out of Africa and remembered passages from a Hemingway novel and you will begin to visualize one of the original safari outfitters still hosing guests in the Mara: Cottar’s 1920s Safari camp. The Cottar family began guiding safaris in the pioneer days of Hemingway and other celebrity hunters. If Hemingway were to return to this camp he would feel at home and The Sunday Times verifies this by writing that “Cottars feels like a scene from Out of Africa”. Cottar’s camp is still a beacon for style-conscious wildlife seekers, in a pristine concession bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti and Loliondo reserves. Professionally guided bush walks with excellent guides, game drives in open safari vehicles are Cottar’s trademarks.

Heralded as a ‘biological bonanza’ by the BBC news, the Matthews Range rises from the arid brown plains on northern Kenya like a green tropical island. With over 500 square miles of tropical montane forest the area is a pristine micro-climate with rare trees, plants and forest life. It is inhabited by the Samburu people and one of the key benefits of visiting the area is the ability to meet with them and see the area’s flora and fauna through their eyes. This makes an excellent combination with Samburu Kalama since they are not that far apart physically but each offers a vastly different exposure to a Kenyan landscape far removed from the plains of the Mara or Amboseli.
