Far too many people arrive at London’s Heathrow Airport and board a train or taxi straight into London. In doing so they are missing one of the most historic and scenic areas of Britain and the chance to enjoy food that rivals anything in the city. Close to Heathrow airport you can find Windsor Castle with its long and continuing relationship with Royalty, just across the Thames is the village of Eton, home to the famous boys’ school which Princes William and Harry both attended. This is also horse country with Ascot race course and polo fields. Most of all it is the River Thames which connects them and provides a scenic back drop to gracious summer living and gourmet dining. Bath is located in the ceremonial county of Somerset in the South West of England. Nourished by natural hot springs which feed the fascinating Roman Baths, the City of Bath offers a unique experience with stunning architecture, great shopping and iconic attractions. The city was first established as a spa by the Romans sometime in the AD 60s about 20 years after they had arrived in Britain .The Romans built baths and a temple on the surrounding hills of Bath in the valley of the River Avon around hot springs. Much later, it became popular as a spa town during the Georgian era, which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone. Jane Austen is perhaps the best known and best loved of Bath’s many famous residents and visitors. She paid two long visits here towards the end of the eighteenth century, and from 1801 to 1806 Bath was her home.

Chester & North Wales

Cornwall

The Roseland Peninsula is one of Cornwall’s special places. Secluded creeks, stunning gardens and hidden churches offer plenty places to discover. St. Mawes, with its picturesque harbor lies a short distance from your hotel. Falmouth, with its colorful waterfront and The National Maritime Museum, is not much further. St. Ives, Penzance and St. Michael’s Mount are accessible as a day trip. Combine all this with a cooperative gulf stream and mild temperatures and you can understand that it is also called the English Riviera.

Devon, Dartmoor and the Jurassic Coast

Devon is one of the most popular of English destinations. Bordered by Cornwall to the west, Dorset and Somerset to the east, it is unique amongst English counties in having two separate coastlines. To the north are the chic little seaside towns and on the southern coast you find Plymouth, departure point for the pilgrims and the 95 mile Jurassic coast which it shares with the county of Dorset. In between is Dartmoor National Park, the last wilderness area in Southern England. Your hotel is situated in the forested hills Of Dartmoor on a road known as Mariners’ Way since sailors used to disembark on the south coast and walk this path to the north coast to find another ship. You visit Devon for its scenic beauty and the chance to walk both the moor and the rugged Jurassic Coast. Dorset...Thomas Hardy Country

What do Lawrence of Arabia, Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Nanny McPhee have in Common? The answer is Dorset. Lawrence had a house called Clouds Hill, which you can visit, and he is buried in Moreton. Tess was one of the many characters in Thomas Hardy’s “Wessex” which was actually based on Dorset where he worked as an architect. Lulworth is the name of a quirky house that served as the location for Emma Thompson’s “Nanny McPhee”. While these are a few of the reasons to visit Dorset there are many more including the picture perfect villages still recalling a Hardy novel in fact, your Inn was featured in several Hardy novels as “The Sow and Acorn”, including “Tess”. The nearby Jurassic coast is also a major draw with its rugged shore and sandy beaches. Take time “Far from the Madding Crowd” and enjoy the English Countryside using a 400 year old coaching Inn as your charming base.

Guernsey

Northamptonshire is known as “the land of spires and squires” because of the many old churches and stately homes that are located in the area. Your hotel dates back to the 15th Century and was in the same family until the early part of the 20th Century. It is in itself an idyllic setting with a 13th Century church, charming pathways and sheep grazing in the meadow. It is also a convenient base for visiting Althorp, final resting place of Princess Diana, Sulgrave Manor, ancestral home of George Washington, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare.

Kent…The Garden of England

Although many parts of Kent are now bedroom communities for Greater London, there are still many unspoiled areas between the city and the sea. Because of its abundance of orchards and hop farms, Kent is often referred to as the Garden of England today, however, vineyards are more visible than hop farms and wines from Kent can hold their own versus the wines just across the channel. Kent is where the Chunnel makes its way under the channel carrying cargo and passengers to France. If you take a ferry from France to Folkestone your first sight of England will be the White Cliffs of Dover, also in Kent. Kent was home to Dickens, Kipling and Churchill among many luminaries and you will get a chance to visit some of their homes. Your base is the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells so named because royalty would come to “take the waters”.

Lake District

Northumberland, along with Cumbria, borders Scotland and is noted for its rugged beauty particularly the 64 miles along its North Sea coast. Once one of the frontiers of the Roman Empire it is the location of Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Romans to keep out the Scots. Its location between England and Scotland made it the site of conflict and even today there are more castles here than in any other county, one of which you will visit. Your home during your stay is the ancestral home of the Blackett family and the 12th Baronet is still actively involved in both the hotel and other ventures in the county.

During your experience you will be guided by an art expert through the great galleries of art in London, Paris and Florence which is, itself, a work of art. From Hogarth to Hockney you will see, in person, the paintings and sculptures that have, up until now, been pictures in a book. Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” will compete with “The Wedding at Cana” by Veronese for your attention. You will be able to compare London’s National Gallery with the Louvre and then, in turn, with the Uffizi. This program starts with a bird’s eye view of London and ends in Paris with a luncheon view from a Michelin starred restaurant high atop the Eiffel Tower; but it is what happens in between that really makes this different. First you get an immersion in sophisticated London culture including art galleries, smart shopping, the theatre and fine dining. Than for a change of pace you take a quick flight to the Isle of Guernsey, close to the French coast but affiliated with England since the time of William the Conqueror.
