Chobe National Park/ Chobe Chilwero

A relic of one of the world’s largest super lakes, the Makgadikgadi dried up thousands of years ago as a result of the continued shifting of the earth’s crust. When the lake was formed, some five to seven million years ago, its shores were the setting for the mysterious transition from ape to man. In the dry season you are able to venture on to the pans on 4wd quad bikes and explore remote archeological sites. During the wet season the landscape transforms. Clouds of flamingo and other migratory birds descend from the heavens to decorate the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest materialize, drawn by the lush grass, and for several months, the desert is teeming with game and predators. The Makgadikgadi is not without drama and, here, the emphasis is on observing the intricacies of a truly unique ecosystem to which Jack’s Camp, has added stylish adaptations of its own.

Sanctuary Chief’s Camp is located on Chief's Island in the Mombo Concession of the Moremi Game Reserve. This area is known as the "Predator Capital of Africa" and is ideal for game viewing. Moremi Game Reserve/ Baines’ Camp

Sanctuary Baines’ Camp has only five luxurious suites. With star baths and sky beds on your private deck, this is a romantic oasis. Kubu Island has been the holiest secret of the Kalahari Bushmen for longer than anyone knows, a place of power and ritual. A granite extrusion island that sits in the midst of a landscape of salt pans that at one time was a massive lake and even today, in the wet season serves as the biggest breeding site in the world for the lesser flamingo. To reach Kubu you leave your camp and head out on quad bikes traveling in convoy Indian-fashion, to lessen the impact on the surroundings. It is a journey where you could accelerate and drive with your eyes closed knowing that you would run out of fuel before you hit an obstacle. You sleep under the canopy of a million-star sky with a silence so intense that you can hear the blood flowing through your ears.
