Buenos Aires is one of the world’s great cities and the 3rd largest in South America. Like all great cities it has its grand avenues, plazas, fountains and parks; so much so that it is often referred to as the “Paris of South America”. But like other melting pot cities it is a city of neighborhoods some rich some less so but each one having something unique to attract the immigrants who live there and the visitors who explore there. The city is made up 48 Barrios or neighborhoods some totally commercial and some totally residential. For the leisure visitor however there are a few that offer unique glimpses into the soul of the city. El Calafate

El Calafate was originally created by the Argentine government to encourage and support the growth of sheep farming in this part of Patagonia. On this Interlude you will visit one of those estancias that took advantage of the town’s presence. When the Perito Moreno National Park was created the town became a center for tourism and visitors came to enjoy the spectacle of the numerous glaciers of which Perito Moreno and Upsala are the best known. The town is situated on the shores of Lago Argentino offering scenic views even without the presence of the glaciers. You will also have a chance to cruise on the lake.

Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls is situated in the extreme northeastern region of the Argentina over a thousand miles from Buenos Aires and shares the falls with Brazil and Paraguay. Sacred land for the Guarani nation and a UNESCO World Heritage Site the falls consists of 275 waterfalls some of them as high as 250 feet. In addition to the natural wonders of the falls you also get to enjoy the facilities of your luxury resort which is located about fifteen minutes from the falls and features three inter-connected pools, five restaurants, a cabaret theatre, a spa and a casino.

Mendoza

There are several wine growing regions in Argentina and the country is the 6th largest global producer of wine. Mendoza, which is located on the western side of the center of the country, is separated from the wine growing regions of Chile by the Andes Mountains. Because of the protective mountains, Mendoza has a temperate climate much like Northern California although the land is semi-arid. This is alleviated by irrigation from rivers and canals flowing from the melted glaciers in the Andes. There are currently over 400,000 acres of vineyards under cultivation making Mendoza the source for over 70% of the country’s production. Mendoza itself is divided into three regions, the Southern region based around San Rafael, the Central region dominated by the Uco Valley and the Northern Region including Maipu and Lucan de Cuyo which is Argentina’s only delineated appellation. Misiones

The Misiones district of Argentina lies in the far north of the country and looks on a map like a wedge inserted to separate Paraguay and Brazil. It is the land of Iguazu Falls and the Parana River and was the focus and location of the movie “The Mission “with Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro. Twenty miles south of the falls is an estate that was established in the 1920’s to grow yerba mate which, when steeped in water creates the drink called Mate which is considered to have medicinal powers. In the 1940’s a manor house was built and years later it was turned into a quiet resort in harmony with nature. The Posada is situated close to the Parana River and the border with Paraguay amidst the Misiones Jungle. This area originally covered 386,000 square miles but is now reduced to 40,000 square miles and yet, even now, 75% of the world’s species are represented.

Salta & Cafayate
